Overview
Venture deep into the forested mountains east of Chiang Mai on an unforgettable two-day journey to the village of Mae Kampong. Hike through lush jungle trails, connect with welcoming locals, cook traditional Thai dishes alongside your homestay host, and unwind in a one-of-a-kind herbal sauna experience. A perfect blend of nature, culture, and relaxation.
Day 1: Into the Mountains and Gibbon Territory
Your adventure begins with a pickup from Chiang Mai city, followed by a scenic one-hour drive east toward the mountainous border of Lampang Province. Our destination is the tranquil village of Mae Kampong, nestled at 1,300 meters (4,200 feet) above sea level.
Before arriving in the village, we’ll take a short forest hike in search of the area’s elusive gibbons. These incredible primates were reintroduced into the wild through a local rehabilitation project and now reside in a hidden corner of the forest known only to a few. A portion of your tour fee directly supports the caretakers who protect these gibbons—providing food during times of scarcity and ensuring their continued safety—while also sustaining their families and way of life.
Guided by one of these caretakers, we’ll venture to a secluded viewing area where you’ll learn about the gibbons’ behavior, habitat, and the inspiring conservation work that supports them. As these are wild animals, sightings can't be guaranteed but we may adjust the itinerary for the best chances of seeing them.
From there, we’ll continue to Mae Kampong. Take time to wander its picturesque streets and soak in the peaceful atmosphere before visiting a nearby waterfall. After a coffee break with sweeping views of the village, we’ll set out on a serene 3-kilometer (1.8-mile) forest hike along a trail rarely seen by tourists.
Along the way, you’ll encounter one of the oldest and most revered trees in Chiang Mai. A village guide will introduce you to the region’s rich biodiversity, pointing out native plants, sharing local folklore, and inviting you to engage all your senses through hands-on encounters with edible herbs, fragrant leaves, and wild botanicals.
After lunch, you’ll settle into your Mae Kampong homestay and enjoy a restful afternoon. As evening approaches, you’re invited to join your host in the kitchen to help prepare a traditional Thai dinner—an intimate and rewarding cultural experience to end your day before a peaceful night in the village.
Day 2: Wellness, Village Life & Farewell
Your second day in Mae Kampong begins at a relaxed pace, designed to help you fully unwind and take in the serene beauty of this mountain village. After a traditional Thai breakfast prepared by your homestay host, the morning is yours to enjoy as you wish.
You might choose to take a peaceful stroll through the village, or the morning is the perfect time for a bit of birdwatching—Mae Kampong’s forested surroundings are home to a variety of bird species, from colorful barbets to laughingthrushes, and the quiet morning hours offer the best chance to spot them.
You can also browse a handful of charming local craft stalls and shops scattered throughout the village. Many residents create handmade products using traditional techniques—such as herbal balms, natural soaps, woven goods, or locally roasted coffee beans—making for meaningful souvenirs that directly support the community.
Later in the morning, you’ll take part in a one-of-a-kind herbal sauna experience, rooted in generations of village wisdom. Using freshly foraged forest herbs and medicinal plants, locals prepare an open-air sauna unlike any modern spa. Wrapped in a herbal blanket and warmed by charcoal embers beneath your bed, you’ll breathe in the healing aromas of the forest in a deeply relaxing, earthy ritual that’s both surreal and rejuvenating.
There’s no sleek facility, it’s a slow, grounding experience that brings you closer to nature and to the local way of life.
After the sauna, you’ll have time to rest, reflect, and pack your belongings. A final home-cooked lunch with your host family brings the experience full circle, offering one last chance to enjoy the flavors and hospitality of the village.
In the early afternoon, we’ll begin the return drive to Chiang Mai and conclude the tour.
