Overview
Embark on an unforgettable adventure into the Mae Taeng district, just 90 minutes north of Chiang Mai. Our journey along the Trail to the Sea of Clouds leads to one of Northern Thailand’s most striking peaks — a challenging ascent that rewards hikers with sweeping 360° views and a breathtaking panorama of Doi Luang Chiang Dao, Thailand’s third-highest mountain.
The route winds through a Musur hilltribe village, tranquil pine forests, and along a rugged mountain ridge before the final push to the summit. From the trailhead, the climb begins immediately, passing through farms and village paths before entering dense forest. As the slope steepens, sections of scrambling over boulders will test your endurance, until the trail levels at the base of the peak. The final scramble to the summit is both demanding and exhilarating, but the reward — standing high above the valley in the Sea of Clouds — makes every step worthwhile.
At the summit, we’ll pause to soak in the views and enjoy snacks and refreshments before descending. The standard loop is 10km, but seasoned hikers can take on the full 23km route for a true endurance challenge. For those who prefer a shorter day, there are options to adjust the distance or even return via the same trail.

Additional Information
What to Know
The Trail to the Sea of Clouds is designed for hikers who crave adventure and don’t shy away from a challenge. This is not a gentle countryside stroll — it’s a physically demanding trek that requires stamina, balance, and determination. The trail involves steep inclines right from the start, with little chance to warm up gradually. Expect a fast rise in elevation, uneven ground, and several sections where you’ll need to scramble over rocks and use your hands to steady yourself.
Because of its rugged nature, this hike is best suited for those who are already active and comfortable tackling steep mountain paths. A solid fitness level will allow you to fully enjoy the experience rather than struggle through it. Confidence on rough terrain is essential, as certain sections are narrow, rocky, and exposed.
The rewards, however, are immense. Every effort brings you closer to sweeping views, pine forests, and ultimately the unforgettable moment of standing above the valleys in a true “Sea of Clouds.” If you enjoy pushing your limits, testing your endurance, and being rewarded with some of Northern Thailand’s most breathtaking scenery, this trek will be one of the highlights of your time in Chiang Mai.

Wonderful experience hiking in Mae Teang. We wanted something relatively challenging and off the beaten track and this didn’t disappoint. We drove about 2 hours to the start point, the last bit of the drive being an adventure itself as we drove off road to a stunning hilltribe village.
We trekked through an amazing pine forest to the summit of the peak. The views were breathtaking and the weather nice and cool on the summit. The total trek distance was approx 10km. The guides were amazing – so friendly and knowledgeable and we had plenty of tasty snacks along the way and lunch at the end.
10/10 and highly recommended.
